SUMMARY:Visualization of a Neutron Star Binary Merger and Subsequent Creat
 ion of a Kilonova
DESCRIPTION:Scientific Visualization & Data Analytics Showcase\n\nVisualiz
ation of a Neutron Star Binary Merger and Subsequent Creation of a Kilonov
a\n\nStewart, Lo, Korobkin, Sagert, Loiseau...\n\nWhere does gold come fro
m? Previously, physicists believed that the heaviest atoms including eleme
nts like lead, gold and Uranium were formed in supernovae. Recent research
has suggested that this is not the case. Instead, merging neutron stars p
rovide conditions for the rapid neutron capture process that synthesizes h
eavy elements. In this video, we show how scientists at Los Alamos Nationa
l Laboratory (LANL) study neutron star mergers and the subsequent radioact
ive afterglow---a kilonova. This study is conducted via large-scale numeri
cal simulations using various LANL developed codes. We give a brief overvi
ew on heavy element formation, introduce neutron star mergers and kilonova
e, showcasing LANL codes used in pursuit of the study, and visualize simul
ation results. In particular, we produce a realistic image of a kilonova e
jecta as it would appear for a nearby observer, which is the first time su
ch a visualization is performed.\n\nRegistration Category: Tech Program Re
