Biography
Albert M. K. Cheng is a Full Professor and former interim Associate Chair of the Computer Science Department at the University of Houston (UH). He is the founding Director of the UH Real-Time Systems Laboratory. He received the B.A. with Highest Honors in Computer Science, graduating Phi Beta Kappa at age 19, the M.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering at age 21, and the Ph.D. in Computer Science at age 25, all from The University of Texas at Austin, where he held a GTE Foundation Doctoral Fellowship. He has served as a technical consultant for many organizations, including IBM and Shell, and was also a Visiting Professor at Rice University and the City University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Cheng is the author/co-author of over 240 refereed publications in leading journals (including two in 2016 in the IEEE Transactions on Computers - the flagship journal of the IEEE Computer Society) and top-tier conferences, and has presented over 100 seminars, tutorials, panel positions, and keynotes. In recent years, he has presented colloquia at Brown University (April 16, 2019), the University at Buffalo (March 14, 2019), the University of Toronto (May 18, 2017), Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University (October 3, 2016), Technische Universitat Wien (Vienna University of Technology, April 15, 2016), Caltech (October 29, 2015), University of California at Berkeley (October 23, 2015), University of Washington (2015), Sapienza University of Rome (2014), University of Oxford (2014), INRIA (2014), Columbia University (2013), University of Texas at Austin (2013), and University of British Columbia (2013). Dr. Cheng is serving and has served on the technical program committees (including many program chair positions) of over 280 conferences, symposia, workshops, and editorial boards. He has completed his term (2011-2015) as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Computers. He has been a Program Committee Member of the top-2 real-time systems conferences: the IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (most recently, RTSS 2015 in San Antonio, USA) and the IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (most recently, RTAS 2016 in Vienna, Austria) and the top Asian real-time systems conference: the IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications (most recently, RTCSA 2017 in Daegu, South Korea). Dr. Cheng served as the Program Chair of the International Symposium on Software Engineering and Applications (SEA) in Marina del Rey, California, USA, October 26-28, 2015, the First Workshop on Declarative Programming for Real-Time and Cyber-Physical Systems (DPRTCPS) in San Antonio, Texas, on December 1, 2015, and the First CPSWeek Workshop on Declarative Cyber-Physical Systems (DCPS) in Vienna, Austria, on April 12, 2016. He has recently chaired the First ESWeek Workshop on Declarative Embedded and Cyber-Physical Systems (DECPS) in Seoul, South Korea, on October 19, 2017 and presented a tutorial at ACM ASPLOS 2019 in Providence, RI.

He is a Senior Member of the IEEE; an Honorary Member of the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication; and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. Dr. Cheng is a recipient of numerous awards, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Initiation Award (now known as NSF-CAREER) and the Texas Higher Education-Coordinating Board Advanced Research Program Award for research in “Optimization and Scheduling of Real-Time Database/Knowledge-Based Systems” (Rank: 12th among 373 funded proposals). More recently, he is the recipient of the 2016 UHCS Academic Excellence Award from UH’s Department of Computer Science, the 2015 UH Lifetime Faculty Award for Mentoring Undergraduate Research, and two Outstanding Leadership Awards as Keynote Speaker and Track Chair at the 11th IEEE International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems (ICESS) in Paris, France, August 2014. Dr. Cheng is a Finalist for the 2017 University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award. His work “Multi-Mode P-FRP Task Scheduling” has been selected to receive an Outstanding Paper Award at the 20th IEEE International Symposium on Real-time Computing (ISORC), Toronto, Canada, May 16-18, 2017. His PhD graduates won the UHCS Best Dissertation Awards for 2017 and 2018.

Dr. Cheng is the author of the popular textbook entitled Real-Time Systems: Scheduling, Analysis, and Verification (John Wiley and Sons). He has been panelist/reviewer/examiner/advisor/assessor for many organizations including the US National Science Foundation, the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the European Science Foundation, the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, the City University of Hong Kong and its Research Office, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Rice University, and Shell’s Internship Program.
