Abstract: The National Science Foundation funded the AI institute for Intelligent Cyberinfrastructure with Computational Learning in the Environment (ICICLE) that will build the next generation of cyberinfrastructure to render Artificial Intelligence more accessible to everyone and drive its further democratization in the larger society. ICICLE will foster interdisciplinary communities, advance foundational AI and CI, and transform application domains. The goal of the BOF is to solicit input and engage these diverse communities to establish a national Cyberinfrastructure for AI. A panel of experts in AI, CI and domain sciences will describe the mission of ICICLE, engage the participants, and answer questions.
Long Description: The National Science Foundation funded the AI institute for Intelligent Cyberinfrastructure with Computational Learning in the Environment (ICICLE) that will build the next generation of Cyberinfrastructure to render Artificial Intelligence (AI) more accessible to everyone and drive its further democratization in the larger society.
The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) fueling advances in science, education and commerce has been driven not only by the ability to aggregate data from a wide range of sources, but also by the availability of increasingly powerful cyberinfrastructure (CI) supporting AI advances. As CI becomes more complex and heterogeneous, end users of the technology face a bewildering set of choices in applying AI to leverage insightful analytics, modeling complex systems, or enabling automation.
ICICLE will foster interdisciplinary communities, advance foundational AI and CI, and transform application domains. Through its innovative approach to training and technology transfer, ICICLE will grow an AI-enabled workforce and incubate innovative companies with sustained diversity and inclusion at all levels. Ultimately, ICICLE will enable a transparent and trustworthy national infrastructure for an AI-enabled future to address pressing societal problems and enable decision-making for national priorities.
The key value propositions of ICICLE include: establish a national Cyberinfrastructure for AI; develop rubrics for training next generation of researchers who can translate from use cases to AI-powered CI; integrate emerging AI technologies with advanced CI capabilities; design a roadmap for future AI-driven science and cyberinfrastructure; and build a nexus of collaboration among AI, CI and domain sciences.
ICICLE will also realize an integrated educational and workforce pipeline development program designed to significantly increase the number and diversity of individuals with AI and cyberinfrastructure skills to meet tomorrow’s workforce needs in a variety of domains.
Salient features of ICICLE's education and outreach program include: integrated broader impact efforts to synergistically amplify ICICLE research outcomes; stimulated youth interest in next generation science career paths through youth programs (e.g., 4-H and Future Farmers of America); democratization of AI objective generating new pathways for AI community to engage the workforce of the future and; the curation, distribution and open licensing to create opportunities for connected communities to creatively employ ICICLE content.
The goal of the BoF is to bring together AI experts, CI and HPC experts, and domain sciences experts and engage them to start the process of creating a roadmap for a national cyberinfrastructure for AI. This BoF would solicit feedback from the SC community on all its value propositions, education and outreach programs.
A panel of experts in AI, CI and domain sciences will describe the mission of ICICLE, engage the participants and answer questions. As an outcome of the BoF, a user group for sustained engagement with the larger community (and backed by ICICLE) will be created, with BoF participants. We expect this BoF to spark significant international community enthusiasm.
