Lightning Talk: Prospects for Data Reduction in Climate Modeling

Workshop:DRBSD-7: The 7th International Workshop on Data Analysis and Reduction for Big Scientific Data

Abstract: Two forces have driving climate modeling to its current strategies for saving output. As one of the oldest scientific HPC applications, and a coupled application, climate models early on developed a data reduction strategy centered on time averaging. At the same time, the extensive post-run analysis required in climate modeling has made it hard to replace current output strategies with combinations of in-situ analysis and advanced data reduction. To do so, one must consider new types of analysis and new customers for climate model information.
