DescriptionWe are looking for a highly motivated HPC software engineer intern to join Voltron Data’s team. On the team, you’ll have the opportunity to help support and grow the Voltron Data and Apache Arrow ecosystems. You will work closely with Voltron Data development teams to help design, architect, and implement high-performance data analytics computational primitives.
What you will be working on:
Below is a rough timeline of where you can expect to be at different points during your career path starting in this position.
Upon joining:
- Spending time learning about the Apache Arrow memory layout, compute primitives, and APIs
- Working on a mini-app of Arrow computational primitives for performance optimization and algorithm exploration
Within a month:
- Collaborating with the open source Apache Arrow ecosystem and other teams at Voltron Data to ensure that compute kernel APIs are performant and can be utilized efficiently
- Building new compute kernels and participating in code review process
- Fixing bugs and writing tests for existing compute kernels
- Optimizing compute kernels using techniques like multithreading and vectorization
By the end of your internship:
- Writing performant compute kernels that leverage vectorization
- Conduct profiling, parallelization and memory bandwidth analyses
- Analyzing compute kernels to identify and understand opportunities to improve performance and efficiency

RequirementsPrevious experience that could be helpful:
- Building libraries in C++, especially using Modern C++
- Using and/or building performance portability libraries on accelerator hardware or targeting multiple CPU instruction sets
- Developing software for manycore computer architectures and GPUs, and/or optimizing software for vectorization, multithreading, GPU acceleration
- Developing, analyzing and optimizing performance of software in the HPC context
- Contributions to open source projects or public code repositories
